The 1952 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop

One of the most striking pieces in Jared’s collection is the 1952 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Standard. This guitar has a captivating history. It arrived in his life in a rather unusual way, landing in his yard after a tornado in Illinois. Jared’s keen eye recognized its significance, given the telltale signs of its two screws, indicating it was an early ’52 model.

What transpired is nothing short of heartwarming – he offered to buy it from the finder, but the finder ended up gifting it to Jared.

The guitar underwent meticulous restoration by a skilled craftsman who not only preserved its original electronics but also handcrafted a new neck.

The result is a truly remarkable guitar, brimming with character and history. It’s become one of Jared’s favorite instruments, a testament to the unexpected turns life can take and the power of music to bring people together.

The Unique Playing Style

Jared’s playing style is as unique as the story of his 1952 Gibson Les Paul. He’s left-handed (but plays right-handed) and opts not to use a pick because it just didn’t feel right; and this choice is deeply personal to Jared. He prefers feeling the strings beneath his fingers, a preference that developed while listening to influential guitarists like Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, and Albert King.

His fingerstyle technique allows him to create a diverse range of tones and nuances, enabling him to express himself in a way that sets him apart from many other guitarists. The ability to chicken-pick and access different tones and textures is a testament to his mastery of this distinctive style.

The Epiphone Signature Blue Power

Jared unveils another jewel in his collection, the Epiphone Signature Blue Power in Pelham Blue. This guitar is the result of his collaboration with Seymour Duncan to create a signature pickup, among other features. With Gibson CTS pots, locking tuners, and a mahogany body and neck, this guitar is a true rock and roll machine.

One standout feature of this guitar is the Silencer P90 pickup. It captures the essence of a P90’s punch while eliminating the usual hum and buzz associated with them. It’s a testament to Jared’s commitment to providing unique tools for fellow guitarists to explore and expand their sonic horizons.

The Pedalboard and Sound

Jared’s pedalboard is a simple yet effective lineup of essential tools. It includes a Klon, a gift from close friend Joe Bonamassa. He appreciates its gain stage, which complements his fingerstyle technique perfectly.

He also uses a Vemuram Tube Screamer for a boost, describing it as the best he’s ever had. The Tube Screamer tightens the sound, making it more focused and helping him experiment with dynamics and expressiveness, and be more reckless.

A Polytune tuner with a kill switch ensures that he’s always in tune and ready for any on-stage challenges. Finally, 1967 Vox Clyde McCoy wah pedal which “sounds like god”, in its original condition, adds a timeless touch to his pedalboard, helping him create those iconic wah-infused sounds.

The Blackstar Amplification

Jared’s partnership with Blackstar has spanned a decade, and it’s clear that the bond runs deep. The JJN 20 signature amplifier, initially designed to meet his needs in smaller venues, led to the creation of two oversized cabinets with GT 175s and Celestion 30s.

These cabinets are powered by the St. James 50-watt amplifier, giving him the extra power required for larger stages. The Blackstar setup provides the perfect canvas for Jared’s sonic artistry, offering a range of sounds and the ability to create feedback and experiment with his music.
