John Mayer Teases New Music Due October 23 Following Remi Wolf Collaboration Featured in Vogue

John Mayer has teased new solo music, and fans will not have long to wait. The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist has confirmed that the release arrives on 23rd October.

The news came via a black-and-white video shared on Instagram on 15th October, captioned simply “I’ll run away with you… October 23”. It offers the first glimpse of what is coming, although Mayer has kept further details under wraps for now.

According to Complex, the release would mark John Mayer’s first new solo music in five years. His most recent solo album, Sob Rock, arrived in 2021, leaning into a polished, late-’80s soft-rock sound led by the single ‘Last Train Home’.

Five years is a long gap by Mayer’s standards. Since breaking through with his 2001 debut album Room For Squares, home to ‘No Such Thing’ and the Grammy-winning ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’, he has released a steady run of records, including 2006’s Continuum with ‘Gravity’ and ‘Waiting On The World To Change’.

Those songs helped establish him as both a hit-making songwriter and a serious blues-rooted guitarist, a combination that has defined his career ever since. The romantic, lyric-like caption on his teaser suggests the new material could lean towards the more personal side of his songwriting, although that remains to be confirmed.

The teaser lands just a week after Mayer appeared on Remi Wolf’s third studio album, MUD, which was released on 9th October via Island Records. The pair team up on the track ‘Moon So High’, which pairs Mayer’s signature guitar work and vocal delivery with Wolf’s distinctive alternative-pop sound.

The Los Angeles singer-songwriter has built a devoted following with her colourful, genre-hopping records, and MUD follows her previous albums Juno and Big Ideas. Speaking to Liam Hess in an interview with Vogue, Wolf explained that the collaboration grew out of a song she had always pictured as a duet with Mayer.

‘Moon So High’ is the latest in a string of collaborations that have shown just how comfortably John Mayer moves between genres. In 2024, he joined electronic music producer Zedd on ‘Automatic Yes’, from Zedd’s third studio album, Telos.

That track brought Mayer’s guitar and vocals into Zedd’s electronic production, taking him well beyond the sound of his own solo catalogue. More recently, his studio work has stretched across pop, country and classic rock.

On Alex Warren’s 2026 album, Mayer contributes electric guitar and additional production to the title track, ‘WILDCHILD’, adding his distinctive musicianship to one of pop’s fastest-rising names.

He also joins country superstar Keith Urban on ‘The Guitar Man’, a cover of the Bread classic featured on Urban’s Flow State, released on 1st June. Credited as featured artist, guitarist and background vocalist, Mayer brings his guitar-driven sound to Urban’s collection of yacht rock and soft-rock favourites.

Country fans will also have heard him on Lainey Wilson’s single ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’, released on 4th June, which features Mayer on guitar.

It is an eclectic list that spans electronic pop, mainstream pop, country and soft rock, and in each case Mayer’s playing is instantly recognisable. That ability to fit into very different settings without losing his own identity is a big part of why so many artists keep calling him.

Away from the studio, Mayer returned to his home state of Connecticut for a solo performance at Mohegan Sun Arena on 9th October. The show saw him deliver a career-spanning set, mixing familiar favourites with deep cuts and rarely performed material.

Alongside his solo career, Mayer has spent more than a decade as lead guitarist and vocalist with Dead & Company, the band he formed in 2015 with members of the Grateful Dead. That role has done much to cement his reputation as one of the most in-demand guitarists of his generation.

Taken together, these projects underline John Mayer’s standing as a sought-after collaborator across very different musical styles. With new solo music now just days away, the focus is set to shift back to his own songs for the first time in five years.

Whether the 23rd October release is a standalone single or the first taste of something bigger remains to be seen. Either way, it promises to be one of the most talked-about returns of the autumn. For now, the countdown to 23rd October is on, and MNPR Magazine will bring you the new music as soon as it lands.
