Hootie & the Blowfish are celebrating 30 years of their second album, Fairweather Johnson, with a digital deluxe edition arriving on 16 October. The expanded release includes the band’s 1996 MTV Unplugged concert, which is available on digital audio for the first time.

To mark the announcement, the live acoustic version of “Let Her Cry” from that Unplugged set is out now across digital platforms. You can listen to it here, and the digital deluxe edition is available to pre-save now.

The release offers fans a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the story of Hootie & the Blowfish, when the South Carolina band were among the biggest names in music.

Released in 1996, Fairweather Johnson had a huge act to follow. It came hot on the heels of Cracked Rear View, the best-selling debut album in US history and one of the top 10 best-selling albums of all time.

The follow-up more than held its own. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, went on to multi-Platinum success and featured fan favourites including “Old Man & Me”, “Tucker’s Town” and “Sad Caper”.

Coming so soon after such a phenomenon, the album captured a band riding a wave of enormous success, and it remains a much-loved part of their catalogue three decades on.

The centrepiece of the new edition is the band’s MTV Unplugged performance, recorded on 19 April 1996 on the Horseshoe at the University of South Carolina. It was a true homecoming, as the university is where the members of Hootie & the Blowfish first met.

The show was also a landmark for MTV, marking the channel’s first ever outdoor Unplugged episode. The band were joined on the night by special guests Nanci Griffith and Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips.

For a band whose story began on that very campus, returning to play in front of a hometown crowd for a national MTV audience made for a special night.

The band have long regarded the performance as a career highlight, and it has been sought after by fans for years. Alongside “Let Her Cry”, the set includes acoustic takes on “Time”, “Hold My Hand”, “Running from an Angel” and “Gravity of the Situation”, as well as a version of “I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love With You”.

Beyond the Unplugged concert, the deluxe edition digs deep into the archives. Disc two gathers ten previously unreleased outtakes from the Fairweather Johnson sessions, including “A Day at the Zoo”, “Cloud of Hope”, “Melba Sapphire” and “Sorry’s Not Enough”.

It also features track commentary and the single edit of “Old Man & Me”, along with B-sides such as “Araby”, “Before the Heartache Rolls In”, “Renaissance Eyes” and “I’m Over You”.

Together, the outtakes, commentary and B-sides offer a closer look at the sessions behind the album, including songs that did not make the final cut first time around.

The collection is rounded out by live recordings captured at Academic Community Hall in Kowloon, Hong Kong, on 4 March 1997. That set includes performances of “Be the One”, “Drowning”, “I Go Blind” and another rendition of “Let Her Cry”.

Recorded the following year, the Hong Kong show captures Hootie & the Blowfish on the road at the height of their success, taking their songs to audiences far beyond home.

The anniversary release comes as Hootie & the Blowfish wrap up a summer of headlining festival appearances. The band are also enjoying a surge of interest from a new generation of listeners, with streaming among audiences under the age of 28 up 70% so far this year.

It is a clear sign that the band’s catalogue continues to connect with younger fans as well as those who have been with them since the 90s, and this deluxe edition offers both a fresh way into one of their biggest records.

Fans can get a first taste of the long-awaited Unplugged recordings now with “Let Her Cry”, ahead of the full digital deluxe edition of Fairweather Johnson landing in mid-October.

Fairweather Johnson (Deluxe Edition) is released digitally on 16 October. You can find out more about the release here.
