Los Angeles pop punk quartet, Lake Rana have released their debut album, Funeral For A Fish, alongside focus track Grasshopper.
Crashing headfirst into existential dread with a grin firmly intact, the record sees Lake Rana twist dark humour, anxiety, and everyday emotional whiplash into jagged, sing-along choruses that somehow make falling apart feel euphoric.
Rather than dwelling on doom, Lake Rana lean into the absurdity of it all across Funeral For A Fish, using sharp hooks and deadpan wit to ask what it means to matter at all and finding unexpected joy in the idea that we’re all just here for a brief, ridiculous swim.

Peeling back the record’s offbeat, goldfish-shaped core, vocalist and guitarist Josh Rana explains the deeply personal origin of the project:
“Funeral For A Fish started as a dark joke about my passion for the aquarium hobby and the number of fish I accidentally killed learning how to keep them alive, but it became something more personal.
The album is about realising your own mortality: that one day you or I will be just as insignificant as a pet goldfish, flushed out of this world and into the next. It sounds bleak, but it helped me accept that none of us are as important as we think and there’s something freeing about that.”
Funeral For A Fish is, at its core, an album about finding strange comfort in the uncontrollable. Lake Rana specialise in making existential dread feel strangely hopeful swinging from gut-punch confessionals to full-throttle catharsis within the span of a single verse.
Armed with deadpan one-liners and widescreen melodies, the band have crafted a debut that feels like cracking jokes at the end of the world with your best friends.
Drawing loose comparisons to The Dirty Nil, Fall Out Boy, and Origami Angel, Lake Rana balance sardonic wit with an almost uncomfortable sincerity, turning emotional chaos into something you can shout back in a basement at 1AM.

It is a sound that feels indebted to the guitar-driven hooks of 2000s pop punk while pulling in the darker emotional currents of emo and flashes of post-hardcore familiar in its DNA, but distinctly Lake Rana in its delivery.
Though Lake Rana operate as a full band, the project is primarily the creative outlet of Josh Rana, who launched the project in 2023 before wiping the slate clean in early 2025 with a more focused vision and a clearer sense of identity.
The songs for Funeral For A Fish were already written and demoed when Josh brought in producer Pete Zen, who recorded the album at a studio house in Burbank, California. Zen shaped the sonic identity of the record, steering production and handling the mix, while Austin Coupe took care of mastering.

Much of the album draws from a genuinely turbulent chapter in Josh’s life. A devastating ankle injury sustained during his senior year of college left him bedridden for months, coinciding with his parents going through a difficult divorce.
The isolation and forced reflection of that period bled directly into the record, informing tracks like Bad Year and Sink.
Elsewhere, songs like Covers and Basket Case For Loving You turn their focus to complicated relationships and the pull of emotional dependency Lake Rana at their most unflinchingly honest.

The album’s title reaches back to Josh’s longstanding aquarium hobby and a darkly humorous reckoning with the idea of mortality itself: that, in the grand scheme of things, our lives may be as fleeting and unceremonious as a flushed pet goldfish.
It is a concept that could easily tip into bleakness, but Lake Rana consistently find the light in it the freedom, the absurdity, and the unexpected relief of accepting your own smallness.
Beginning in July 2025, Lake Rana rolled out Funeral For A Fish one single at a time, steadily building momentum ahead of the full release. The album arrives today, 6 March 2026 and marks a genuine statement of intent from one of LA’s most promising new voices in pop punk.
Funeral For A Fish is out now. Stay tuned for further Lake Rana news coming soon.
