Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble will release Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues for Allah ’26 on November 20, 2026 via Verve Records, a six-track live LP drawn from the group’s 2026 tour marking the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s 1975 album Blues for Allah.

The collection also stands as a tribute to Was’s longtime friend, collaborator and Wolf Bros bandmate Bob Weir. Rather than recreating the studio originals, the Detroit-bred ensemble reworks the material through Motor City soul, jazz, funk and improvisation, documented on stage during the anniversary run.

Was has been deep inside the Grateful Dead songbook since joining Weir in Wolf Bros in 2018. Those nights, he says, changed how he heard the repertoire. “Playing with Bobby Weir and The Wolf Bros drew me deep into the music of the Grateful Dead,” Was explains.

“The songs became way more than lyrics and a chord chart – they became more like ‘friends’ that I looked forward to hanging out with night after night. We hope that this record conveys our deep respect and love for this music and for the fans who have made it such an important part of their lives.”

On Live Dispatch Vol. 1 he filters that repertoire through the Pan-Detroit Ensemble: Was on bass with Dave McMurray (saxophone), Jeff Canady (drums), Vincent Chandler (trombone), Steffanie Christi’an (vocals), John Douglas (trumpet), Wayne Gerard (guitar), Mahindi Masai (percussion) and Phil Whitfield (keyboards). The approach favours exploratory arrangements, jazz-inflected improvisation and deep-pocket rhythm over note-for-note recreation.

“There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe,” Was says. “There’s a rawness, a lack of pretension, and an unmistakable underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city.”

That sensibility underpins readings of Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower and King Solomon’s Marbles, the soulful stretch of Crazy Fingers, the drive of The Music Never Stopped, and the quieter Sage and Spirit and Blues for Allah.

The Music Never Stopped accompanied the album announcement, with Crazy Fingers following on October 30 – both offered as early windows onto the Ensemble’s take. Live Dispatch Vol. 1 follows the group’s 2025 Mack Avenue debut Groove in the Face of Adversity, which introduced Was’s latest hometown chapter as a blend of jazz, juke-joint blues and loose-limbed funk. The new live set extends that conversation into the Grateful Dead catalog.

Across five decades Was has earned six GRAMMY Awards as a producer, bassist and composer, with credits including The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, John Mayer and Willie Nelson. He co-founded Was (Not Was), received a BAFTA for Backbeat and an Emmy for The Beatles: The Night That Changed America, and serves as longtime president of Blue Note Records.

Born and raised in Detroit, he continues to champion that city’s musical traditions through the Pan-Detroit Ensemble and the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue.

Formed by Was, the Pan-Detroit Ensemble draws on jazz, soul, blues and funk to celebrate Motor City heritage while leaving room for the improvisational freedom associated with the Dead. Live Dispatch Vol. 1: Blues for Allah ’26 brings those two strands together as a document of friendship, discovery and songs that still reward new settings.
