Formed in 2013, Donkey Jaw have spent more than a decade building a reputation in the Nevada punk scene. Their sound pairs the grit and hooks of ’90s punk with driving drums, stripped-back guitar riffs and raw, rebellious lyrics.

It is music built for crowded rooms and shouted singalongs, and the band wear their influences proudly. They point to Dillinger Four, Screeching Weasel and The Brokedowns as key reference points, which gives a good idea of where their rough-edged brand of punk is coming from.

Those are well-chosen touchstones. Screeching Weasel, formed in the Chicago area in the mid-1980s, became one of the defining names of American pop-punk, while Minneapolis outfit Dillinger Four built a loyal following with their gruff, melodic and politically charged records. The Brokedowns, also from the Chicago area, carry the same blend of noise and hooks into more recent years.

Donkey Jaw’s line-up features Zack Ryan on lead vocals and guitar, Sean Brenker on guitar and vocals, Jared Obregon on bass and Koedus McKinley on drums.

With two guitarists sharing vocal duties, the band have the gang-vocal energy that suits their style, and the four-piece set-up keeps things lean and direct.

The upcoming Hey!Fever release has been designed with two audiences in mind. For new listeners, it will act as an introduction to the band, gathering material from their singles catalogue in one package. For longtime fans, the new recordings will offer fresh songs to sit alongside the tracks they already know.

Putting the singles on vinyl also gives the band’s back catalogue a physical home, something that suits a scene where records, merch tables and local shows still go hand in hand.

The signing adds Donkey Jaw to the roster of Hey!Fever Records, a Southern California punk label that has been steadily building its catalogue of independent punk acts.

Before the new record arrives, fans in Nevada will have the chance to catch the band live. Donkey Jaw’s next hometown appearance is on 15 November at the Reno Punk Flea Market.

The show gives local fans the chance to see the band in the kind of setting their music was made for, as they gear up for their debut release on Hey!Fever Records.

More news on the vinyl release is expected in the coming months, so keep an eye out for further announcements from the band and the label.
