Veteran melodic rock outfit, Mattador have released their long-awaited new studio album, “III”, via Frontiers Music Srl.

The record marks a significant milestone for the Puerto Rico-born band, who reunited in 2022 after a hiatus stretching back to 1995, and it arrives packed with twelve tracks of all-original material spanning power ballads, riff-heavy anthems, and high-octane rock.

Alongside the album release, Mattador have unveiled the focus track “Out For Blood”, accompanied by an official visualizer. The song is one of the most direct and hard-hitting moments on the record, and its origins are rooted in both musical instinct and real-world events.

Drummer and vocalist Carlos Benitez explained the track’s DNA. “Out For Blood is one of the most aggressive, no-nonsense tracks on III. Inspired by conflict and the determination to stand your ground, it’s ultimately a song about unity and fighting for what you believe in.”

“We had a great time developing it in the studio with Miguel Rodriguez and Mike Villegas, and it grew into one of the album’s standout moments thanks to its raw energy, powerful vocals, sharp guitar work, and relentless rhythm section.”

Guitarist Miguel Rodriguez added further context around the track’s writing process. “I originally recorded the demo for Out For Blood without lyrics, focusing purely on creating a powerful guitar-driven song.

After the band added their parts, Carlos named it Out For Blood because of the intensity of the music, and that sparked the direction for the chorus and lyrics. Around the same time, the war in Ukraine had begun, and the inspiration suddenly fell into place. It’s a reminder that songwriting ideas can come from anywhere – sometimes when you least expect them.”

“III” represents Mattador at their most focused and fully-formed. The band were determined to craft something that stood apart from the current production landscape, favouring an organic sound over the polished sheen common in contemporary releases.

Benitez elaborated on that approach. “We feel that we have a great album packed with amazing songs, from big ballads and acoustic compositions to rock anthems and so much more. It’s an evolution of the band and it has it all. The production is more on the organic side of things.”

“We didn’t want it to sound like other productions out there today, and we worked hard to find the right balance to make it sound powerful and current but different from what is considered standard nowadays – and we are pleased with the results.”

The album was co-produced and mixed by Bob St. John, a producer with a formidable track record that includes work with Extreme, Dokken, Collective Soul, Duran Duran, and others. His involvement helped Mattador achieve the sonic balance they were chasing – something rooted in classic rock values but with a sharp, contemporary edge.

Benitez also highlighted the significance of the band’s new member. “Newcomer to the band is our bass player and multi-instrumentalist Abraham Millett, who comes from working and touring as a member of Third Eye Blind and many others. I play drums, and I also produced the album, while on vocals is original singer Mike Villegas, and on guitar is original member Miguel Rodriguez.”

“Collectively, all of the original members have been involved in high-profile gigs and bands and working with international artists and world tours during the band’s hiatus – and they bring all of that experience and growth to the group’s creative process. With this lineup, we found the right balance that inspired us to make this new album.”

Mattador’s story stretches back to 1988. Originally active through to 1995, the band built a loyal following through explosive live performances and a distinctive blend of hard rock and Latin influences.

During those early years they shared stages with legends including Aerosmith and Iron Maiden, and their reach extended well beyond Puerto Rico into the European rock scene.

The reunion in 2022 reignited that creative spark, with the founding members channelling decades of accumulated experience into the writing and recording of “III”. The result is a record that feels both nostalgic and vital – a band reclaiming their identity while clearly pushing forward.

The current Mattador lineup features Michael Villegas on lead vocals and acoustic guitars, Carlos Benitez on drums, percussion, and vocals, Miguel “Tito” Rodriguez on guitars and violin, and Abraham Millett on bass and keyboards. That combination of melodic sensibility, hard rock backbone, progressive textures, and a contemporary edge makes for a lineup as versatile as the material they’ve recorded.

With “III” out now and the backing of Frontiers Music Srl behind them, Mattador are well-positioned to introduce themselves to a whole new global audience – while giving long-term fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
